Is there anything cooler than things that glow in the dark? Ultraviolet black light has a wide range of applications in our lives, from the medical field to the crime scene; from museums to parties.

Maybe you haven’t noticed their existence, but it plays a vital role in us constantly.

What is Black and UV Lighting? How do they work? Is it safe for us? This post will bring you the answer.

1. What is ultraviolet(UV) light

Ultraviolet light is electromagnetic radiation or light between the visible spectrum and X-rays. Ultraviolet light has a wavelength in the range of 10 nm to 400 nm and an energy of 3 eV to 124 eV. It is named for it is closest to the purple portion of visible light. Scientists divided Ultraviolet radiation into three different bands: UVA, UVB and UVC. (types of UV light)

UVA

UVA has the longest wavelength compared to the three bands. Its wavelength range is between 320-400 nm. UVA rays represent up to 95% of UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. UVA rays are very powerful, they can also enter some clothes, mist or even glass. Similarly, UVA rays help the skin mature and wrinkle as they penetrate deep into the skin and damage the underlying cells.

UVB

The UVB wavelength is 290-320 nm. The UVB ray intensity varies depending on the season, area and time. They are most prevalent in the northern half global summer months or in the Earth’s orbit closest to the Sun. UVB rays are the main cause of skin whitening and sunburn, and often damage the superficial skin’s surface.

UVC

The wavelength of the UVC rays is 200-290 nm. These rays have the shortest wavelength. They are the most dangerous rays. Nonetheless, when the ozone layer completely absorbs them, these rays did not reach the earth’s surface.

2. What is black light?

Black light, Wood’s lamp, or UV light for short, that emits long-wave (UV-A) ultraviolet light and very little visible light. “Blacklight” is a specific type of ultraviolet light. It emits ultraviolet radiation in most long-wave UV-A areas. Although UV-A is safe, it can cause eye damage if exposed to extended periods of time.

Therefore, black light is part of the UV light. Black light emits ultraviolet light (ultraviolet rays) in the UV-A band.

3. How does ultraviolet black light works?

uv black light

Black light appears dark purple, but most of the light it emits is in the ultraviolet (UV) range of the spectrum, which is invisible to the human eyes. So why do black lights make things shine? Specifically, a substance phosphor called a phosphor absorbs ultraviolet rays and then immediately releases energy as visible light.

Many countries also use phosphors on their money to prevent counterfeiting; many laundry detergents use phosphors and other substances as color brighteners, which is why white and other light clothes shine in the light.

In addition, our body uses phosphorus to create many body parts, so our nails and teeth shine under black light. Forensic scientists usually use black light when searching for evidence at crime scenes.

4. Are black lights Safe?

ask-blackboard-

Does “black light” affect human health? Can a UV light trap harm me or my clients and employees?

It is widely known that tanning with UV light can damage your skin and eyes. Many people want to know if using UV and black light in performance is safe for them, especially if you will be exposed to UV light. It lasted for more than a few hours.

UVA is thought to cause premature aging and has recently been associated with certain skin cancers. Yet, UVB is a major cause of skin cancer. To be honest, UVA is the safest UV spectra. Exposure to UVA from black light is well below the accepted safety limits and is harmless to people working nearby. Black light exposure is much lower than outdoor UVA does.

No evidence shows that the use of UV black light increases the risk of skin cancer because they emit very low levels of UV radiation. They are often used in industry, nightclubs or amusement parks to make things shine. Black lights are usually LED fluorescent or incandescent bulbs that have been modified to emit only UVA.

5. What are black lights used for?

Entertainment

Black light glow in the dark, work great with any stage, birthday, wedding party and Halloween celebration.

Fire investigation

Ultraviolet light has always been one of the means to investigate the reason of fire. Carbon residues on walls, floors, furniture and carpets are immediately visible under UV light.

Art inspection

Using an ultraviolet light to react differently to various types of materials, collectors can protect themselves from art fraud through UV exposure.

Beauty and skin care

Ultraviolet therapy can treat a variety of skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo and persistent itching. UV phototherapy is usually available at a medical clinic or beauty spa. Today, you can also find UV skin care products on some shopping sites such as Amazon, Ebay.

Crime scene check

If you often watch the criminal drama, then you must be familiar with this scene: forensic medicine relies on ultraviolet light to find fingerprints, as well as blood and other body fluids. The use of ultraviolet light enables crime scene investigators and forensic laboratories to see fingerprints produced by fluorescent materials.

Counterfeit currency detection

The UV light source scanner emits a specific color for different currency denominations and shows whether the banknote is genuine or counterfeit.

Document verification

Driver’s licenses, passports, credit cards and many other official documents with invisible fluorescent markers become visible and can be quickly and easily verified by security professionals under UV light.

Pest control

Ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 365 nm to 395 nm can induce various insects. Some of the electronics Mosquito Killer, Insect Repellent and Bug Zapper use this principle.

6. Fluorescent, HID Lighting? Think LED

Fluorescent lamp

Many people decided to use fluorescent lighting because it is more affordable. They usually appear in a tubular form, but the glass portion of the bulb is very fragile. So if you are planning to buy a black light lamp, you should buy a more durable lamp.

HID

Using this type of lamps on the stage will be expensive. They need time to warm up and will become too hot quickly during the indoor phase. In addition, these bulb replacements are expensive, so they are not the most economical choice for you or the venue you are playing.

LED

Energy efficiency

LEDs typically consume very low power. LED lamps to use about 60% less electricity than incandescent, fluorescent and halogen lamps. Environmental friendly and saves you.

Extend your life

Unlike incandescent lamps, LEDs do not “burn out” or fail, they only darken over time. The most significant advantage of LEDs compared with traditional lighting solutions is their long life span. Average LED lasts 50,000 working hours.

Improve safety with LEDs

In terms of LED lighting, security is probably the most overlooked advantage. In terms of lighting, the main risk is heat dissipation. LEDs emit almost no positive heat, while traditional bulbs like incandescent lamps have only 10% energy-powered used for light (which also makes them extremely inefficient compared to LEDs).

Open instantly

Most fluorescent and HID lamps not provide full brightness when turned on, and many fluorescent and HID lamps require three minutes or more to achieve maximum light output. However, the LED lights up almost immediately with 100% brightness. So you don’t have to wait and start your party trip quickly.

Cold temperature operation

Unlike fluorescent lamps, LEDs like cold. At low temperatures, starting a fluorescent lamp requires a higher voltage and the luminous flux is reduced. In contrast, LED performance increases as operating temperatures decrease.

Conclusion

Ultraviolet radiation is divided into three different bands: UVA, UVB and UVC.

Blacklight is a type of UVA. Under the illumination of ultraviolet light, the substance called a phosphor absorbs ultraviolet light and then immediately releases energy as visible light.

Generally, the ultraviolet black light is safe. In all types of violet light, LED ultraviolet light is the most recommended in terms of performance and safety. So, do you have any questions about the ultraviolet black light?
